Understanding Permit Statuses

The meaning and progression of different permit status designations

Shovels tracks permits through their entire lifecycle using four status categories: in_review, active, final, and inactive. These statuses follow a chronological progression in most cases. When a permit is filed, it receives a file_date and the status "in_review." Upon approval, it gets an issued_date and the status changes to "active." When complete, it receives a final_date and the status updates to "final." If something goes wrong at any stage, the status changes to "inactive." This system allows for clear tracking of a permit's progress from application to completion.
